INFORMATION ~ STUDIO
The Croft Studio was founded by artist
DAISY BUDGE who, as a young
art student in 1932, first saw the Isle of Skye from the deck of the steam-ship Killarney,
and fell in love with the beautiful island,. She met and married a local man
Roderick Budge, who’s family ran the Dunvegan Hotel, but then had to leave
Skye and find work in England where she taught art for many years, in private
schools.
When Daisy and Roderick retired in 1968, they returned home to Skye and
converted the old croft house into a studio where visitors could come in and see
Daisy at work.
Inspired by the magnificent scenery of Skye, Daisy
developed her watercolour paintings and studied copies of ancient Celtic
manuscripts such as THE BOOK OF KELLS, developing her own screen-printing
designs based on these. This was at a time when Celtic art did not receive the
recognition and respect that it does today.
Now in her 88th year, Daisy is as active as ever and still enjoys
painting every day . Little did she realise seventy years ago, that falling in
love with Skye would result in a life-time’s work and that she would never
take that so-called retirement!
After 10 years of hard work, Daisy needed
more help in the Studio, so in 1978 her son DONALD returned to Skye to expand
the screen-printing
while his wife PAMELA hand
painted Celtic designs and mythological subjects on wood. Pamela also continued
the art of silk painting and extended the range of pressed-flower and seaweed
lampshades. Today, after thirty four years of development, ,the Croft Studio
displays a wide range of original work, all of it produced on the premises by
either Daisy, Pamela or Donald. Come and see, watercolours, prints and cards
from our own designs, wooden plaques hand-painted with Celtic motifs mythology,
cushions, wall-hangings, mirrors, etc
